The best treatment for bilateral microtia requires a specific analysis: If the deformity is mild, an otoplasty canaloplasty hearing reconstruction surgery can be considered to address both cosmetic and hearing problems. Typically, one side is done at age 5-6 and the other at age 10-11. If the deformity is severe, it is not suitable for the above treatment and can be treated with a vibratory bridge procedure to improve hearing. If the deformity is very severe, a BAHA implant is required to improve hearing. Currently we only use it for adults, but overseas experience can be used for children over 5 years old. For those who do not want to undergo surgery before the procedure, a soft band BAHA can be worn to improve hearing so as not to affect the child’s hearing and speech development.
