More and more people are enjoying amateur athletics. Confrontation is always fascinating but often accompanied by injury, and as the center of weight bearing and activity in the lower extremities, the knee bears the brunt of it. How do you assess the severity of a knee injury in sports? It’s all about whether you go straight to the doctor or whether you can rest and wait for it to heal on its own. After all, we all know that going to the hospital is a bad experience. After exercise, pain in certain parts of the knee often corresponds to a corresponding injury of some kind. The injuries listed in these charts below have in common that (in cases that are not particularly severe) they do not require emergency, special treatment by a doctor and have a very good prognosis through rest and exercise. So a visit to the doctor can be put on hold.
Signs that indicate the severity of a knee injury.
1. Swelling.
This is the most important sign and is a major indicator.
Severe injury: swelling of the whole joint due to acute bleeding within the joint and injury to the intrinsic structures, such as cruciate ligament tears, meniscal injuries, cartilage injuries, fractures.
Minor injury: local swelling, subcutaneous swelling and bruising, implying injury to superficial structures.
2.Walking ability.
Severe injury: inability to walk, severe walking pain or inability to control gait.
Minor injury: even if there is pain, walking is generally unimpeded.
3.Joint mobility.
Severe injury: often lack of full range of mobility.
Minor injuries: even if there is pain, the joint can be fully flexed and extended.
4.Sense of pressure.
Severe injury: sometimes there is resistance and a sense of pressure when the joint is flexed and extended.
Minor injuries: there is no resistance and a sense of pressure.
5.Pain sensation.
Severe injury: pain is widespread and deep.
Minor injury: pain is limited and shallow.
6.Rest and symptom regression.
Severe injury: relief after rest is not obvious.
Minor injuries: rest obviously relieved.
Severe injuries, need to go to the hospital urgently, receive formal treatment. Minor injuries, meaning that the prognosis is better, even without treatment, rest often can be good.
