There are many causes of blood in the stool, as well as causes outside the digestive tract.
If the change in stool colour is caused by taking medication or food, it will usually return to normal within 2 to 3 days after stopping the medication or food.
For bleeding caused by digestive disorders, such as bleeding from acute gastric mucosal lesions, bleeding from haemorrhoids or anal fissures. If the bleeding is mild, it may heal on its own with diet and rest.
However, for bleeding in the faeces caused by tumours, tuberculosis, ulcerative colitis and extra-intestinal factors, treatment is usually required. If the cause can be eliminated, blood in the stool may be curable.
