Due to endocrine influences, the parietal sweat glands do not become active until puberty, so there may be no underarm odour before puberty but an underarm odour after puberty. Some patients may experience hypochondriasis as a result of inappropriate hygiene education or trauma and may subjectively feel that they have an axillary odour that they did not previously have.
