Parents are asked to choose circumcision carefully

As people’s quality of life continues to improve and their knowledge of hygiene increases, many parents are willing to choose to have their children circumcised during the winter and summer holidays. This is why this is also the busiest time of year for urology.

In many people’s eyes, circumcision is a very small operation, it doesn’t hurt to do it casually and wear it inside your pants, it doesn’t bother you, but in fact, “circumcision is not only a cure, but also a cosmetic procedure. The surgical skills required are very high. But unfortunately, many hospitals or units regard circumcision as a minor surgery, as a trainee or low seniority physician for operational training. There are many postoperative complications and sequelae of circumcision, the incidence and severity of which are often closely related to the skill level of the operator. Therefore, attention should be paid and every circumcision should be treated seriously”.

At the same time, because of the narrow foreskin mouth, the urethral opening cannot be exposed, and abnormalities of the urethral opening may be found during surgery, such as urethral cysts, repetitive urethra, hypospadias and other diseases, which require immediate correction by a urologist. Therefore, a “small” circumcision may cause lifelong regrets.

In many countries, circumcision is routinely performed during the neonatal period, and many post-operative patients have had medical disputes due to the discovery of giant urethral hypospadias after surgery, mistakenly believing that MIP was caused by circumcision. Therefore, in 1975 the American Academy of Pediatrics ruled that routine neonatal circumcision was prohibited for any congenital anomaly, especially hypospadias, and in 1989 the report reiterated that neonates with genital anomalies should not be circumcised alone because the foreskin should be left for hypospadias surgery.
