Different methods of treatment are used for dry cough caused by different etiologies, and it is impossible to say exactly which treatment is best.
In general, cough suppressants or lozenges can be used as appropriate. If the dry cough does not subside, it is important to seek professional treatment. Acute and sub-acute dry coughs are treated symptomatically with decongestants, cough suppressants, antipyretics and antibacterial therapy. For chronic dry cough, identifying the cause is the key to treatment. Ideally, the cause should be identified and specific treatment should be given. If no etiological tests are available, empirical treatment can be based on clinical clues and common causes.
