The effects of spinal cord embolism syndrome on children

If you unintentionally find that your child’s feet are not equal in size after birth, or there are no obvious abnormalities in the feet after birth, but as they grow older, they gradually appear to be inconsistent in size, and have difficulty urinating and defecating, and urinary incontinence increases the number of times they urinate. Then you should pay attention to your child. It is likely that your child has a spinal or spinal cord-related pathology. Spinal cord embolism syndrome is not to be ignored. Spinal cord tethering syndrome is a pathological condition in which the terminal part of the spinal cord (conus) is pulled by attachment to the blind end of the dural canal at the end of the spinal canal and stays below its normal position (lumbar 1), subject to mechanical stretching, distortion, ischemia, and other adverse effects. In all types of congenital spina bifida, when the spinal cord is abnormally stretched, localized neurological tissue is deprived of blood and oxygen, resulting in a series of clinical symptoms due to neurological dysfunction, also known as spinal cord embolism syndrome. The clinical manifestations of spinal cord embolism syndrome are various, such as lumbosacral lipoma, latent hair sinus, abnormal walking, decreased muscle strength of lower limbs, deformation (such as high arched foot, valgus foot and entropion foot) and pain, as well as urinary and fecal dysfunction. Once these symptoms appear, it is important to take the child to a qualified medical institution as soon as possible for relevant examinations, such as X-ray spinal radiographs, CT examinations, MRI examinations, etc. The only treatment for spinal cord embolism is surgery to loosen the tense end filaments, and asymptomatic patients should be operated as soon as possible to prevent further damage caused by ischemic degeneration of the nerve tissue. Our orthopedic department has rich clinical experience in the treatment of spinal cord embolism, and we use nerve detector technology to assist in the judgment and precise cutting of the end filaments to loosen the embolism and finally solve the pain of the child. Do not ignore any abnormal details of your child’s growth and development. If you find that your child has any of the above-mentioned symptoms, please consult a doctor as soon as possible to achieve early detection and diagnosis as well as early treatment, so as to get the best possible recovery as soon as possible.
