His maternal grandfather, Dr. Hu Mei, a specialist in internal medicine, came to China in 1906 to found Yali Hospital (the predecessor of Xiangya Hospital) and served as its first president until he left Changsha in 1927 to return to the United States.    Mr. Freeman is widely known as a descendant of Hu Mei, but what is less known is Mr. Freeman’s other identity: the great-grandson of Dr. William Williams Keen, one of the founders of neurosurgery in the United States. As a member of the class of 1862 at Jefferson Medical College (the second medical school in U.S. history), Dr. Keen’s accomplishments in neurosurgery are enough to make him one of the pioneers in the field, including one of the first in the nation to perform external ventricular drainage and resection of brain tumors. Because of this, Mr. Freeman has also taken a keen interest in the development of neurosurgery at Xiangya Hospital.    In Room 35 of the Neurosurgery Department of Xiangya Hospital, Associate Professor Li Xuejun, Deputy Director of Hunan Cranial Base Surgery-Neuro-Oncology Clinical Technology Research Center and Associate Professor of Neurosurgery Department of Xiangya Hospital, accompanied Mr. Freeman for a tour and extensive communication and discussion.
