Orthognathic surgical correction of dental and maxillofacial deformities

According to domestic and international statistics, about 40% of the population suffers from malocclusion (i.e. misalignment of teeth). Most of them are due to abnormal tooth position and arch relationship, while the growth and development of the jaw bone itself has no obvious problems, this kind of odontogenic malocclusion is called dental malocclusion, which can be corrected by orthodontic methods. Another 5% of malocclusion is due to abnormal jaw size, morphology or position disorders between the upper and lower jaws, caused by bony malocclusion (i.e., dental and maxillofacial malformations), this bony malocclusion on the function of the oral and jaw systems and facial aesthetics is much greater than the dental malocclusion. For this serious dental and maxillofacial malformation caused by abnormal jaw development, a combined orthodontic and surgical approach (i.e. orthognathic surgery) is required to obtain a unified orthodontic effect of function and appearance. Patients with dental and maxillofacial malformations, which manifest not only as severe malocclusion, but also as severe facial deformities such as maxillary protrusion, mandibular recession, mandibular protrusion, mid-facial depression, upper and lower jaw protrusion or recession, will not only affect the patient’s occlusal function, but also affect the patient’s psychological health and develop psychological disorders if not treated immediately and effectively. Through orthognathic surgical treatment, not only can the dental and jaw functions of patients with dental and maxillofacial deformities be restored, but also their abnormal and deformed appearance can be corrected and made harmonious and proportional, thus significantly improving or even reshaping one’s appearance.
