The progression of disease varies widely for different causes of swollen lymph nodes behind the ear. If the swollen lymph nodes behind the ear are induced by a mild local inflammation, the swollen lymph nodes often resolve on their own when the infection subsides. Severe or chronic infections require anti-infective treatment, and the lymph nodes may still be palpable after cure, requiring surgical intervention if necessary.
Lymphoma, leukaemia, tumours and nodal disease can also cause swollen lymph nodes behind the ear. These conditions tend to get progressively worse and are difficult to heal on their own and require prompt access to a hospital for a clear diagnosis and active treatment.
