Hyperthyroidism treatment methods and radioactive iodine-131 treatment instructions

Hyperthyroidism treatment: Hyperthyroidism is a common endocrine disorder that occurs in women, but men tend to have more severe symptoms. There are two effective treatments for hyperthyroidism, so there is no need to be afraid if you have it. Treatment Endocrine therapy with drugs such as tabazol, Sezhi or propylthioxypyrimethamine; radioactive iodine-131 therapy. Both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Patients can choose independently with the advice of their physicians. Advantages and disadvantages of both: Advantages of endocrine therapy: convenient treatment at the primary community hospital, known as treatment without leaving home, weekly follow-up visits can be carried out at the community hospital, and physicians can adjust the dosage of drugs according to changes in the condition in a timely manner. Disadvantages: It takes 2-3 years to use the medication, and it is easy to relapse after dosing. Blood tests are required at each follow-up visit to determine whether there are any side effects caused by the drugs, so more blood is drawn. The side effects of the drugs include: allergic reactions (drug rash and in severe cases, exfoliative dermatitis); bone marrow suppression (decrease in the third line including white blood cells); liver damage – hyperthyroidism can be severe with liver damage, so if endocrine drugs are used again, liver damage will be aggravated. If these side effects occur, the patient is usually referred to nuclear medicine for iodine-131 treatment. Due to the long treatment time, the cumulative cost is relatively expensive, and the long treatment time is also stressful for the patient. The advantages of iodine-131 radiation therapy in nuclear medicine: simple, safe and convenient, three months review after one treatment, no need for any examination and treatment during this period. There are no side effects such as allergy, white blood cell drop and liver damage. Therefore, the cost is low, about 1000 RMB per treatment including examination. If the reports of recent examinations at the local district hospital are common, it can further save the patient’s expenses. If a second treatment is needed, it can be done after three months. Disadvantages: Treatment can only be given within a tertiary hospital; the only side effect is the possibility of a decrease in thyroid function (20%). This usually occurs after three months, so a review three months after treatment is important. Early detection and correction will not cause any sequelae. Usually, the dose of “Eugenol” is very small and does not cause any side effects. It has no effect on marriage, childbirth and the next generation. Some patients (middle-aged and elderly patients) may have to take it for life, but there are no side effects due to the low dose. Even patients who do not want to be treated with iodine-131 can be treated with endocrine medication because of the combination of treatments used in our department.
