The most important question for couples preparing for IVF treatment is: Will our future child be the same as any other child born from a natural pregnancy? What is the difference? Will there be something more or less? In fact, this question is not only the concern of the future parents who are going to have IVF, but all those who are interested in this medical technology want to know and understand it! The first IVF babies born in the world are now married and have given birth to healthy children of their own. The percentage of IVF births per year in China is very low, much lower than the 5% rate in some European countries. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Health of our country, there is no significant difference between the defects of IVF and those of natural pregnancies. At present, according to studies by scholars from various countries, there should be no difference in IQ between IVF and other children with natural pregnancies; and the incidence of multiple births in IVF is higher than in natural pregnancies, so these multiple births lead to higher complications such as preterm birth and low birth weight. Therefore, nowadays, our country has been trying to avoid the occurrence of multiple births in IVF, requiring the avoidance of twin births and strictly prohibiting the occurrence of triplets. But there is a part of IVF where genetic disorders may be higher than in children conceived naturally, and that is when men who are infertile due to genetic defects get male offspring through IVF methods. A study by Belgian scientists found that these men had 7% more genetic defects in IVF children born through the ICSI method, with hypospadias being the most common. Such high rates have not been reported in the literature from other countries. Therefore, children born through IVF are generally safe, and the possible risks are evaluated and communicated in detail by the doctor before the IVF treatment is performed.
