How long does it usually take to heal from dry socket

Patients with dry socket can usually heal in 1-2 weeks with systematic treatment. Dry socket is an acute infection occurring after tooth extraction, mostly seen in the posterior mandibular teeth, especially after extraction of mandibular obstructive wisdom teeth. The typical clinical symptom is severe pain 2-3 days after tooth extraction, which can radiate to the auriculotemporal region, submandibular region, and the top of the head, and cannot be relieved by general pain medication, and the extraction wound is empty, with decay, necrosis, residual blood, granulation, and foul odor. With systematic treatment, dry socket can usually heal in 1-2 weeks. The principle of treatment is to thoroughly clean the wound, isolate external stimuli and promote the growth of granulation tissue. The treatment should be repeatedly rinsed with hydrogen peroxide and saline under local anesthesia, scraping the decayed and necrotic tissues of the extraction wound, and putting iodoform oil gauze in the extraction sockets.
