What is ocular dryness?

Dry eye, is a general term for a variety of disorders characterized by decreased tear film stability due to abnormal tear quality and quantity or abnormal tear kinetics from any cause, accompanied by ocular discomfort, leading to ocular surface tissue lesions. Dry eye is generally categorized into five types: evaporative, aqueous-deficient, mucin-deficient, abnormal tear kinetics, and mixed. By far the most common cause is a relative decrease in tear production and quality. Dry eye occurs with the more the use of electronic products increases, the eyes to the visual screen purpose for a longer period of time, the number of transient relatively reduced, tear evaporation more; corneal exposure time is too long, inflammation stimulation and so on. The main symptoms are dry eyes and foreign body sensation, burning sensation, itching, photophobia, congestion, blurred vision, easy to fatigue, sticky filamentous secretion. At present, the treatment of dry eye disease is mainly: (1) to improve eye habits and living environment, such as eliminating triggers, reduce eye intensity, less exposure to air conditioning and smoke environment, etc.; (2) pay attention to sleep, treatment of blepharitis, conjunctivitis and other diseases; (3) in response to a certain degree of dry eye, need to be tear substitution therapy, such as artificial tears, permanent or temporary closure of the tear duct system, wear wet room glasses, etc. to increase the corneal surface aqueous humor, and so on. (4) Or medication + physical therapy, physical therapy includes local hot compresses, lid massage, unblocking, etc.; (5) Severe dry eye can also choose surgical treatment, such as the closure of the tear ducts, free transplantation of the sublingual gland.
