When is bowel resection necessary for mechanical intestinal obstruction?

A segment of bowel that needs to be removed is one that has become necrotic and non-functional. Such a segment has no chance of recovery and will only necrotize in the abdominal cavity if not removed, causing more serious complications. In strangulated intestinal obstruction, if the blood supply cannot be restored or if necrosis of the segment is likely to occur even after the supply has been restored, removal of the obstruction is often necessary.
