What is retinopathy of prematurity

If your baby is born prematurely at less than 36 weeks, if your baby is a low weight baby at less than 2000g, and if your baby has a history of oxygenation, always remember to have fundus screening at 4-6 weeks after his birth or corrected gestational age up to 32 weeks. What is retinopathy of prematurity? It is a type of abnormal proliferative eye disease of the retinal vessels that occurs in premature and low birth weight infants, and is one of the major causes of childhood blindness, accounting for 6% to 18% of childhood blindness. The younger the gestational age and the lower the birth weight of the newborn, the higher the incidence. With the improvement of medical treatment, especially the progress of neonatal resuscitation technology in recent years, giving high concentration of oxygen inhalation to premature infants has significantly increased the survival rate of premature infants, bringing joy to some families, but at the same time making the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity gradually increase. Retinopathy of prematurity, once it occurs, progresses rapidly. For children who are detected early, they can be closely observed and some of them can resolve on their own. The progressive stage of the lesion may be regressed with appropriate therapeutic measures such as laser. Since the mechanism of neonatal retinopathy is still unclear, prevention and treatment are very difficult to achieve the key of early detection, early detection and early treatment for prevention. Unlike neonatal deafness screening, which can be done 1 day after birth, the period of fundus activity in preterm infants usually occurs 3-6 weeks after birth, which is also the best time to screen for retinopathy, and many parents do not care, and some parents even think that their children are too young to wait until they grow up and then go to the hospital. Many 5-6 month old children come for screening and if unfortunately a lesion does occur, it is too late. Don’t ruin your child’s life because of ignorance.
