Is surgery alone enough for cataract patients?

Cataract ultrasound emulsification surgery can now provide most cataract patients with better vision after surgery, but is surgery alone sufficient for all cataract patients? Many of my surgical patients have a combination of other ocular pathologies, which requires a comprehensive approach to design the best surgical plan for the patient.

A patient who underwent surgery recently made me realize that surgery is not a trivial matter, and that even for the more mature cataract ultrasound surgery, each patient needs to be carefully analyzed and treated individually.

This surgical patient was a diabetic patient, and during the routine preoperative examination, I found that very thin neovascularization had grown on the patient’s iris, and the retina, too, was a bit more severe than in the opposite eye. Retinal involvement in diabetic patients is usually more symmetrical, and this patient’s case was relatively rare. Cataract surgery was performed only for the patient, and the vision was good in the early postoperative period, but the original cause was not found, which was like leaving a “time bomb” in the patient’s eye, with the risk of vision loss at any time. Therefore, based on my experience, I stepped up the arrangement of carotid ultrasound for the patient, and sure enough, the results showed atresia of the internal carotid artery, which means that the blood supply to the eye and the brain is very poor. Therefore, treatment of internal carotid artery stenosis became an urgent matter. I communicated to the patient about the situation and arranged the next step of eye treatment, which the patient was very grateful for, and the subsequent results were very satisfactory.

Thus it is evident to see that cataract surgery is not simply surgery for the sake of surgery, but to provide the best treatment and service to the patient by solving the actual problem that exists.
