Iodine-131 treatment for hyperthyroidism is safe, simple, trouble-free and economical, and most of them can be cured by taking medication once, while taking western medication often requires continuous medication for more than 1-2 years. Currently, there are three main methods of treating hyperthyroidism – anti-thyroid drugs (Western medicine), surgery, iodine-131 treatment, of which iodine-131 is often the first choice for adults with hyperthyroidism. Because hyperthyroidism (hyperthyroidism) is a common endocrine disease, iodine-131 treatment is to utilize the metabolic characteristics of iodine uptake by the thyroid gland, so that iodine-131 with beta rays accumulates in the thyroid gland (hyperactive thyroid follicles take up more iodine-131), by destroying some of the follicular cells of the thyroid gland, shrinking the enlarged thyroid gland, and thus achieving a reduction in the level of thyroid hormones. The efficacy of iodine-131 in the treatment of hyperthyroidism has been recognized both at home and abroad, and the total efficacy is more than 90%. Generally speaking, patients’ symptoms gradually improve after 2-3 weeks of iodine treatment and disappear completely in 3-6 months, while some symptoms of a few patients may disappear after several years. Due to the lack of uniformity in treatment methods both at home and abroad, the cure rate of one course of treatment varies from 70% to 96%, and the recurrence rate is about 1% to 4%.
