The danger of amblyopia and the principles of treatment

Amblyopia is a developmental eye disease in children. We diagnose amblyopia as a condition in which there is no obvious organic pathology in the eye and the corrected visual acuity is less than 0.8. Children with amblyopia not only have low vision, but also do not have perfect binocular vision and stereopsis, which can affect their future learning and work. Severe cases can lead to monocular blindness. Amblyopia is mainly caused by strabismus, refractive error, ptosis, congenital cataracts, etc. Refractive errors include hyperopia, astigmatism, and high myopia. Most amblyopia can be cured, but it must be treated as early as possible, with the best results before the age of 6, but difficult above the age of 12. Early detection is the only way to treat amblyopia early, but early detection is difficult for parents, and often the best time for treatment is missed, causing lifelong regret. Parents should pay attention to whether their child has strabismus, squinting, seeing things too close, closing one eye in the sun, or looking at things with a crooked head. There is now an ophthalmic device that can perform early eye screening for children over 6 months of age. Amblyopia treatment is a long process and requires the patience and cooperation of the child and parents. Some parents think that their children are too young to wear glasses early, but they take unscientific methods such as massage and acupuncture, which are harmful to the children and not beneficial. In addition to wearing glasses to correct refractive error, we also need to cooperate with masking and amblyopia training, amblyopia training includes network therapy and amblyopia trainer therapy. The effectiveness of the treatment is closely related to the degree of cooperation of the child, and the child is required to adhere to the training and regular follow-ups.
