Flat feet, commonly known as “duck feet”, are common in adolescents and often affect school and life, and plague many patients. Many parents bring their children to the hospital because they feel foot pain, limp, or even ankle deformity when they walk or stand for a long time. Duan Deyu of the Department of Orthopaedics of Wuhan Union Medical College Hospital recently brought a 9-year-old child to the Department of Orthopaedics of Union Medical College Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (the only national clinical key specialty of orthopaedics in Hubei Province) because of limping. After perfect preoperative planning, Prof. Duan Deyu successfully performed the first “Kepinzhi” minimally invasive correction surgery for the child in South China, which was less invasive and the child recovered quickly. According to Prof. Duan Deyu, the early symptoms of flatfoot are mild and gradually worsen, resulting in walking pain, Achilles tendon contracture and bony structural changes, which require early detection and treatment. Current treatment for clubfoot includes conservative treatment methods such as arch pads and physiotherapy, as well as surgical treatment methods for soft tissue and bony structures. Traditional surgical methods are often more traumatic and prone to complications, but our department adopts the new international minimally invasive concept and technology, using “Kepinzhi” to carry out minimally invasive surgery to treat flatfoot, which is less traumatic and largely improves the safety and efficacy of the surgery and reduces the pain suffered by patients.
