What should I do if my two-month-old baby has a cough?

Coughing is a protective respiratory reflex to remove secretions or foreign bodies from the respiratory tract. A two-month-old baby is still a small baby, so if he or she has a cough, it is important to look for the cause and treat it accordingly. If a 2-month-old baby’s immune function is not well developed, he or she is prone to respiratory infections, which can easily progress to the lower respiratory tract and cause bronchitis or pneumonia, which can also manifest as a cough. If a baby has a significant cough, he or she should go to the hospital in time to see if the cough is caused by pneumonia; choking on milk or saliva can also cause a baby’s cough, which is usually not serious and appears suddenly without other discomfort. When your baby coughs, you should pay attention to keeping the indoor air humidity and temperature appropriate, open the windows frequently to increase the circulation of fresh air, and if the room is too dry, it is recommended to use an air humidifier. If your baby is coughing due to choking, adjust the way you feed your baby by picking him up vertically after feeding and gently patting him on the back until he burps. Cough due to respiratory infection requires antibiotics if bacterial infection is present. You can let your baby drink warm water properly. For breastfed babies, the mother should pay attention to a light diet. When the baby coughs, you can pick the baby up and gently pat the baby’s back, from the bottom up. If your baby’s coughing symptoms are not relieved and there is phlegm, you need to take cough and phlegm medicines under the guidance of your doctor. Parents need not worry too much about their baby’s cough, as long as they take good care of it, keep an eye on it and take effective measures, the symptoms will be cured. If the cough does not improve continuously, you need to go to the hospital in time.
