Couples who both have type O blood do not normally experience ABO hemolysis, but Rh hemolysis may occur. Hemolysis does not occur when both husband and wife have type O blood, which is the same type of blood group. There is ABO hemolysis, which may occur only if one mother is type O and the other is a type other than O, such as type A, B, or AB. There is another kind of Rh hemolytic disease, when the mother is Rh-negative and the fetus is Rh-positive, the mother’s body produces antibodies to Rh-positive blood, and when she gets pregnant again, if the child has Rh-positive blood, Rh hemolytic disease may occur, which is mainly manifested by anemia, jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly. So couples who are O-type blood versus couples with different blood types are less likely to develop hemolysis.
