For hair loss due to ringworm of the head, it usually takes 2 to 3 months, and some patients may have permanent hair loss. Tinea capitis is a common skin condition in which dermatophytes infect the hair and scalp. Since it usually takes about 2~3 months for hair to start growing from within the hair follicle, even milder cases of tinea capitis can take 2~3 months for hair to grow back. Patients can be treated with oral antifungal medications such as ashwagandha and terbinafine as prescribed by the doctor. Topical application of terbinafine cream, Butenafine cream or topical cleansing with ketoconazole lotion can also be used. In addition, permanent hair loss may occur in patients with severe symptoms of tinea pusillaris and tinea cruris. For patients with ringworm of the head leading to hair loss, it is important to follow the doctor’s instructions for a full course of treatment, full dosage of medication, to ensure that the fungus is killed, in order to prevent aggravation of the condition or recurrence.
