How to treat osteonecrosis of the femur?

The onset of osteonecrosis of the femoral head can affect the patient’s personal activities and, if not properly treated, can lead to disability. For patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head, the pain can present a cyclical change. Here we will learn about the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femur to help patients relieve their pain. In clinical practice, for patients with early-stage osteonecrosis of the femoral head, we generally recommend conservative treatment, which can help patients to resume normal activities. In late stage patients, once the shape of the femoral head has been destroyed, it is impossible to restore the shape of the necrotic femoral head. However, in general, conservative treatment can help patients to relieve the pain of the disease and also control the continued necrosis of the femoral head. For patients with early to moderate stages of osteonecrosis, conservative treatment is effective, but for patients with advanced stages, surgical treatment is required. Drilling can help decompress the patient, which can lower the intraosseous pressure to promote venous return and release the spasm of the trophoid vessels, so that the new blood vessels can grow into the ischemic area along the bone foramen, which is the simplest surgical method to treat osteonecrosis, mainly for patients without joint surface collapse in the early stage. If the condition of osteonecrosis is more severe, osteotomy can be chosen to treat the condition. By changing the position of the femoral head in relation to the femoral stem, it increases the weight-bearing area of the femoral head, reduces the pressure on the femoral head, and moves the osteonecrosis lesion out of the weight-bearing area. In winter, when the weather is colder, the circulation of patients with osteonecrosis is slower and the pain is significantly worse. Therefore, in winter, patients with osteonecrosis of the femur must keep warm and stay out of cold places as much as possible to maintain good blood circulation in the body.
