Graves’ hyperthyroidism is a syndrome of immune, endocrine, and neurological disorders. Many patients experience mental and emotional abnormalities such as irritability, irritability, anxiety, depression, and in some cases, even schizophrenia, in conjunction with increased thyroid hormones. Studies on the etiology of hyperthyroidism have shown that long-term anxiety, depression and stress are also important triggers of hyperthyroidism, so that bad mood is both a trigger and an aggravator of hyperthyroidism. In our preliminary study, we found that many patients with hyperthyroidism had significantly improved their anxiety and depression after 131I treatment; however, we also found that patients with no improvement in mood still had significantly higher thyroid biochemistry. This suggests to us that the relationship between mental and emotional state and hyperthyroidism is very close, so I often advise my patients to ensure emotional stability during treatment and after recovery.
