New Generation Silicone Breast Implants: High Quality Silicone – Safe Material
Before you choose which breast implant to use for your breast augmentation, please be fully informed about the new generation of silicone breast implants. At a time when you are faced with such an important decision, it is important to have all the necessary information to obtain the best possible result.
Mentor is conducting clinical studies to evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of its silicone breast implants, MENTOR® MemoryGel® Breast Implants and MENTOR® Saline Breast Implants. Mentor is currently conducting seven clinical studies with silicone gel breast implants. More than 200,000 women have been enrolled in these studies, which provide a body of clinical evidence confirming the safety and efficacy of silicone gel-filled breast implants. Mantoux is committed to providing objective and truthful clinical information on the safety of breast implants to ensure that consumers make informed choices that will fulfill the beauty dreams of thousands of women.
Fortunately, the scientific community supports our focus on product safety, and both MENTOR® MemoryGel® breast implants and MENTOR® MemoryShape® breast implants have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in breast augmentation. In a highly respected study, the Institute of Medicine concluded that “there is no evidence that silicone implants are the cause of any significant systemic disease. In fact, women have long been exposed to silicone frequently in their daily lives.”
Modern silicone versus traditional silicone
The development of silicone gel-filled breast implants has undergone several changes to meet the needs of increasingly sophisticated clients. The first generation of silicone breast implants used a thick shell containing a hard gel. The second generation of implants, introduced since the late 1970s, had a thinner shell and used a softer gel, which addressed the perception of patients and surgeons that breast implants were not soft enough to be perceived and visible through touch.
In the mid-1980s, manufacturers introduced third-generation implants because of concerns about rupture rates due to the thinner shells of second-generation implants. These breast implants have a slightly thicker shell and gel, but are equally soft.
All three generations of silicone gel-filled breast implants are now collectively referred to as silicone breast implants. By producing safe, soft silicone gel breast implants that are as soft to the touch as real breast tissue, Mentor is committed to meeting the changing needs of surgeons and women alike.
Silicone Contact
The amount of silicone released from MENTOR?MemoryGel? implants is minimal, less than the amount absorbed from everyday consumer products that contain silicone. (For example, silicone is found in many everyday products such as abrasives, sunscreens, hand creams, antiperspirants, soaps, processed foods, waterproof coatings and chewing gum.)
– Approximately equal to one thousandth of the weight of a nail
– According to studies submitted to the FDA, the silicone in implants is more than one million times lower than the safety threshold
– Compared to commonly used consumer products (e.g., antiperspirants, skin creams and hair care products), silicone in implants is more than 100 times lower in daily absorption.
