Patients with sciatica caused by a herniated lumbar disc can be managed as follows. First, conservative treatment is preferred for patients with new onset of this disease or for patients with mild symptoms. In this case, the doctor will ask the patient to rest continuously on a hard bed and apply continuous lumbar traction. On top of this, the doctor will give the patient a series of anti-inflammatory, anti-swelling, pain-relieving, nerve-nourishing and muscle-spasm-relieving drugs for treatment, which may provide relief within 1-2 weeks. Second, patients with recurrent exacerbations or those for whom conservative treatment is ineffective may require surgical treatment, and doctors tend to adopt minimally invasive surgical treatment in the early stages. Patients can undergo local ozone injection, radiofrequency ablation and nerve root block to recover, and still undergo similar treatment with conservative treatment after surgery. For patients who do not do well with minimally invasive treatment, conventional surgery may be required to remove the nucleus pulposus.
