You should not drink alcohol within a few hours of taking metronidazole

In general, do not drink alcohol for 7 days after taking metronidazole. Metronidazole belongs to the nitroimidazole class of drugs, which can affect the metabolism of alcohol. If alcohol is consumed during use and within 7 days of stopping the drug, or if alcoholic beverages are consumed, it may cause a disulfiram-like reaction. Mild disulfiram-like reactions may lead to nausea, vomiting, flushing, etc. In severe cases, patients may even experience chest tightness, difficulty breathing, or even shock, endangering their health. Since everyone has different metabolizing ability for alcohol and drugs, it is better for patients to avoid drinking alcohol for 7 days after taking metronidazole. In addition, patients are advised to take the drug half an hour after meals and avoid spicy and stimulating foods, which can reduce the occurrence of gastrointestinal reactions. If uncomfortable symptoms appear in the body, the drug needs to be stopped immediately.
