Is it possible to have an ectopic pregnancy with IVF?

The possibility of ectopic pregnancy can occur with any assisted conception technique, including IVF. This is because even though the embryo is placed into the uterine cavity, the embryo still needs to travel around the uterine cavity to choose a suitable location for implantation. If the embryo travels to the fallopian tube, the tube can deliver the embryo into the uterine cavity through peristalsis if it is functioning normally; however, if the tube is functioning abnormally (e.g., inflammatory adhesions, stenosis, too thin and long), ectopic pregnancy may occur once the embryo travels to the fallopian tube. In addition, if there is inflammation of the endometrium or adhesions in the uterine cavity, etc., resulting in the inability of the endometrium to accept the embryo, it can also increase the chance of ectopic pregnancy.
