Drug-induced renal injury in elderly patients should firstly discontinue the relevant drugs and suspected drugs, and then take supportive therapy to prevent complications and promote the recovery of renal function. A variety of drugs including antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, proton pump inhibitors, diuretics and herbs containing aristolochic acid such as guanmutong, guanpengi, and qingmuixiang may cause kidney injury. As soon as kidney injury associated with drug application is detected, a medical professional should be consulted to assess whether to stop the drug immediately. Supportive therapy is mainly a non-dialysis treatment measure or dialysis treatment for acute kidney injury and its comorbidities, aiming to improve symptoms and reduce complications. Necessary renal puncture biopsy is also recommended so as to clarify the type of pathology associated with renal injury, e.g. acute interstitial nephritis, acute tubular necrosis, etc., in order to decide whether to apply hormones and/or immunosuppressants to facilitate the recovery of renal function. Elderly patients with drug-induced renal impairment are advised to go to the hospital in time and choose the appropriate medication regimen under the guidance of a professional physician, so as not to delay the condition.
