Doctors rely on “face reading”, is it reliable?

The art of “face reading” is not unfamiliar to everyone, and can be seen in the streets of small and medium-sized cities in China. Nowadays, some people say that “face reading can not only tell your life, but also tell your disease”; even on the Internet, it is said that a computer software has been invented in Britain, which can tell whether a newborn baby has one of the 500 genetic diseases by inputting a three-dimensional image of its head and face. Is there some truth to these? Reporters with questions to the hospital head gamma knife center, met with the director of the doctor, hoping to get a clear answer from experts. The director said: “Let’s not talk about whether the face can tell the fate, but the face can tell the disease is certain. It is not surprising that the face can tell the disease. In Chinese medicine, “look, smell, ask, and cut” are the four steps to see a doctor, of which “look” is the face, so the face can initially determine the condition. The diagnostics in Western medicine clearly tells us that many diseases will be fully reflected in the face. For example, anemia and jaundice are obvious. There are also liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, lung disease, etc., all will have special face color and face shape performance. As to whether computer software can determine that a child has one or more of the 500 or so genetic diseases, this is not certain, but at least it is possible. There are genetic diseases that can be diagnosed by seeing a glance, without any software at all. Such as Down syndrome.” The director of the Gamma Knife Center for the head of the hospital, specifically introduced us to a special disease that can be diagnosed at a glance, called “acromegaly. ”Acromegaly” is a type of pituitary adenoma, because the tumor secretes too much growth hormone, resulting in long-term abnormal bone growth. If the disease develops before puberty, it leads to gigantism; if it develops after puberty, the limbs cannot grow any longer, but only become thicker, and “acromegaly” appears, with a special change in the face. In this case, the diagnosis can be made by face reading, and a glance at the face will tell you that it is a pituitary adenoma. The picture below shows a patient with “gigantism” on the left and a man and a woman with “acromegaly” on the right, whose faces gradually change in shape after the disease. The common feature is that the extremities of the limbs, especially the fingers and toes, become thicker, especially at the joints, and are accompanied by pain. In the facial features: thickening of the scalp, appearance of folds, thickening of the lips, longer chin, pronounced cheek protrusion; nasal mucosa hyperplasia leading to snoring and nasal congestion.        Everyone may remember well the face shape of the animation star Shrek, whose prototype is a patient with acromegaly. How similar are the facial shapes of the two people in the picture below, the left is Ming Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang and the right is a real-life acromegaly patient. It can be inferred that Ming Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang may have pituitary tumor “acromegaly”. The patient with acromegaly, at the beginning of the disease, did not have any discomfort, but felt able to eat and work, energetic, strong as an ox. Only at a later stage, various complications will emerge: physical weakness, physical incompetence, diabetes, heart disease is getting heavier, vision loss and even blindness, and will greatly shorten life expectancy, so it must be treated as soon as possible. ”Acromegaly” is a type of pituitary adenoma, which is one of the more common brain tumors. Treatment for pituitary adenomas includes medication, surgery and gamma knife treatment. Gamma knife treatment is non-invasive, safe and effective.
