Fever in children with cold towels or hot towels

Fever is the first symptom that manifests itself in some common diseases in childhood. Respiratory and digestive tract infections as well as some infectious diseases can cause fever. The fever itself is a protective response of the body against pathogens, which enter the body and the body clears them by mobilizing the immune response, hence the fever. In addition to the application of medication to reduce fever, parents should pay attention to learn how to take care of their children at home when they have a fever, such as whether to use cold towels or hot towels to physically reduce fever. Most fevers in childhood are infectious fevers (excluding fevers caused by wearing more clothes or heatstroke), and the rise in body temperature is divided into three stages: rising temperature, persistent high fever, and falling temperature. The blood vessels start to constrict during the period of rising body temperature, reducing the heat distribution, which is the reason why the hands and feet are still cold. At this time, do not cool your child with a cold towel, but keep him/her warm properly, you can use a warm towel on the forehead. If the child allows, you can use a warm towel to rub the child’s belly fossa, armpits, leg fossa, which are areas where large blood vessels are distributed. If the child is irritable and uncooperative, dispense with this step and apply antipyretic medication to quietly lower the temperature. When the child’s body temperature is in a stable period, for example, the fever remains at 39℃ for a short period of time, the child’s hands and feet are hot, so it is appropriate to reduce the wrapping to dissipate the heat, and the parents can use a cold towel to put a compress on the child’s forehead if the child cooperates. If the child cooperates, the parents can use cold towels on the child’s forehead. Physical cooling is only an aid to reduce fever, and is not a substitute for medication. Whether it is physical cooling or medication cooling, it is only to increase the child’s comfort. If the child is irritable or does not cooperate during sleep, physical cooling is not necessary.
