Is schistosomiasis cirrhosis serious?

The severity of schistosomiasis cirrhosis depends on the stage of cirrhosis, whether it is decompensated or compensated, with decompensation being more severe. Schistosomiasis cirrhosis is different from other cirrhosis and is rarely seen in the north. It is mainly due to long-term repeated schistosome infections, where schistosomes lay eggs near the sink area, and the eggs and their toxic substances repeatedly stimulate and cause a large amount of connective tissue proliferation, which finally leads to cirrhosis. It is generally more common in the lakes and swampy areas of the Yangtze River basin, more common in places with abundant water flow, and more common among farmers and herdsmen. The characteristics of schistosome cirrhosis are also different from those of other causes of cirrhosis. Schistosomes cause damage directly in the confluent area and portal hypertension appears earlier. Enlarged spleen is a typical symptom of portal hypertension, and giant spleen is more common, which is slightly different from other cirrhosis. There are also differences in treatment, as schistosomes must be killed, and also schistosome eggs must be killed. After eliminating the causative factors, more effective treatment can be carried out. Some cases of schistosomiasis cirrhosis are found late, and a few may require liver transplantation when the cirrhosis reaches the decompensated stage.
