What is acromioclavicular impingement?

Neer, 1972, was the first to promote the concept that during internal rotation of the shoulder joint, pain is caused by impingement of the rostral arch and the anterior 1/3 of the acromion and rotator cuff tendons. 90% of rotator cuff injuries are caused by impingement. There are three types of rotator cuff patterns: flat, curved and hooked. The course of impingement is divided into 3 stages: I. subacromial edema and congestion II. rotator cuff tendonitis and tendon fibrosis III. subacromial spur formation and rotator cuff injury; early conservative treatment: mainly rest, avoid pain inducing shoulder movements, avoid violent exercises, physiotherapy, rotator cuff strength exercises, subacromial closure treatment. If conservative treatment is not effective, surgical treatment can be performed: minimally invasive shoulder arthroscopy with capsuloplasty.
