How to prevent dental caries in children

The most common oral disease among children is caries (“worm teeth”), according to statistics, the caries rate of children’s milk teeth in China is as high as 80% to 90%. Parents must pay attention to the oral health care work of children in different age periods. Fetal period. Since the embryo of milk teeth is formed at 6~7 weeks of fetus, the health condition and nutritional status of mother’s gestation period is inevitably related to the child’s teeth. The mother should take proper supplements of various nutrients, such as protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D and trace elements such as calcium, phosphorus and iron, and eat more meat, eggs, soy products, milk and vegetables and fruits to promote the formation and calcification of the hard tissues of the child’s teeth. In addition, certain drugs can affect the development of dental embryos and may cause malformations such as cleft lip and palate, therefore, pregnant women must take drugs carefully under the guidance of a doctor. Infancy. Infants provide an environment prone to dental caries because of the richness of sugars and carbohydrates in various diets. Parents should pay special attention to the feeding method and never let the child sleep with a bottle. It is better for the mother to wrap gauze around her finger or use a commercially available finger toothbrush to gently scrub the tooth surface of the baby teeth with water to remove food debris and plaque after each nursing session or every night. Early childhood and preschool years. When all the baby teeth erupt around the age of 3, parents should teach their children to brush their teeth and establish the hygiene habit of brushing twice a day in the morning and evening. The correct brushing method is to use the vertical brushing method, put the toothbrush on the gum area, brush the upper teeth downward, brush the lower teeth upward, and brush the teeth in a certain order, from back to front, from left to right, brush the outer side of the teeth, brush the inner side, then brush the chewing surface, brush the upper teeth and brush the lower teeth, brush each tooth surface 8 to 10 times, and take 3 minutes to brush the whole mouth of teeth. School age. Children’s milk teeth begin to fall out around 6 years old, and permanent teeth gradually erupt. At this time, special attention should be paid to the sixth age teeth. Six-year-old teeth are very important for children’s jaw and face development, maintaining the upper and lower teeth bite relationship, and maintaining the shape of the face. The best way to protect children’s “sixth-age teeth” is to take them to the hospital to do the anti-cavity treatment of sulcus closure.
