Regular bowel screening to avoid the threat of colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer is an important disease that threatens people’s health, and the incidence of colorectal cancer has reached 40/100,000, and the trend is gradually increasing. In Europe, the average age of colorectal cancer is about 65 years old, while the average age of colorectal cancer in China is 56 years old, which is 10 years lower than that in Europe; since China has not established a national screening program, colorectal cancer in China is found to be late, and a considerable portion of rectal cancer cannot be operated to preserve the anus and has to be performed Stoma — that is, artificial anus, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients. However, if early colorectal cancer is found, the situation is completely different, for stage A colorectal cancer, the five-year survival rate can reach more than 90%, for stage B tumor, the five-year survival rate can reach more than 70%, while the five-year survival rate for stage C colorectal cancer is only 40-50%, and the five-year survival rate for stage D is even lower, so if early colorectal cancer is found, the treatment effect is good and even curable. Therefore, if early colorectal cancer is detected, the treatment is effective and even curable, and the complications of surgery are low, the surgery is less traumatic, the recovery is fast, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy are not needed after surgery. In addition, if colorectal polyps are found, they can be removed under colonoscopy, which can prevent the occurrence of colorectal cancer. How to perform colorectal cancer screening? Generally speaking, patients in China need to be screened for colorectal cancer from the age of 40, and after the age of 40, fecal occult blood test will be performed first, and if fecal occult blood is found to be positive, colonoscopy will be performed. If the colonoscopy is normal, fecal occult blood test will be performed once a year, and if it is normal, colonoscopy will be performed every 2-3 years. For people who have colorectal cancer patients in their family, the frequency of colonoscopy can be increased appropriately. For hereditary colorectal cancer family patients, if they belong to family members with familial polyposis, generally the first examination needs to be performed at the age of 12, and if colon polyps are found, polyp removal should be performed if, without polyps, colonoscopy should be performed once every six months or so, and total colectomy should be considered after the age of 16; for hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer family members, the first colonoscopy should be After the age of 18, the first colonoscopy should be performed, and then every 1-2 years. Will colonoscopy be a big financial burden? Because due to our medical system, these two tests are very cheap, fecal occult blood test only costs 10-20 RMB, and colonoscopy only costs 280 RMB, so it only costs about 20 RMB to have fecal occult blood test once a year, and the 3-year colonoscopy only costs 280 RMB, which will not cause any financial burden. Moreover, although China’s health insurance does not require regular checkups, it does not oppose to colonoscopy screening, so part of the cost can be covered by health insurance, which can better reduce the burden. Therefore, performing colon cancer screening is an important means to prevent and detect early colorectal cancer, and we hope to enhance health care awareness and prevent the occurrence of colorectal cancer.
