Can you not grind your teeth and grind them less?

In clinical practice, some patients may ask for direct fillings without removing decay, or for less grinding. Our dentists understand the discomfort that may occur during the decay removal process, and patients are concerned about the unbearable pain and want less grinding. Or some patients especially cherish their teeth and want to keep more of them because they are worried that they will lose a little bit if they grind them down. So is it okay not to remove the decay or not to remove it cleanly? The answer is no. Why? The decayed tooth, the part destroyed by bacterial erosion, is no longer healthy dental tissue, it is relatively loose and soft, and there is a large amount of bacteria inside. The filling material is not well bonded with this part of the tooth tissue, in other words, it is not firmly bonded and cannot stay. In addition, there are bacteria in the decayed material, which will continue to erode and destroy the healthy tooth tissue and lead to the deepening of caries, and more likely to cause the filling to fall off. Therefore, the decayed material should not only be cleaned, but also be cleared. How can we reduce the pain and discomfort during the treatment? Generally speaking, the smaller the cavity is, the less it needs to be removed and the process is simple, so it is less likely to have discomfort such as sensitivity and pain during the treatment. Therefore, if the caries is found, the early treatment can reduce the discomfort during the treatment. What if the caries is already big and serious, and it is likely to be painful in the process of removing the decayed material? Then local anesthesia before treatment can effectively relieve the discomfort during the treatment. The treatment will no longer be unbearable. Since the decayed part has to be cleaned, the amount of grinding off is determined by the degree of tooth decay. The dentist will try to remove the decayed part carefully without destroying the normal tooth tissue, and keep the healthy tooth tissue. Therefore, it is not possible to grind a little less just because you want to keep more of your tooth tissue, but not to clean the bad part.
