Scaling is the removal of calculus, plaque and pigment from the teeth using an ultrasonic scaler or a hand scaler. Therefore, if the blackened gums are caused by calculus or gingivitis, they can be treated by scaling. If, on the other hand, the darkening of the gums is due to other causes (e.g. heavy metal poisoning, smoking, etc.), it cannot be removed by scaling.
