The right understanding of IVF pregnancy rates!

Most of the patients who have made it to this stage of in vitro fertilization (IVF) have had a bumpy visit to the clinic. Choosing IVF as a treatment option becomes their last hope. After years of experience, they have spent a lot of time, energy and money, and it is the common wish of all patients to have a successful IVF. After more than 30 years of development, the clinical pregnancy rate of IVF has grown from a few percent at the beginning to a few tens of percent now, which is a great progress, but after all, it is still far from the wonderful wish of 100%. The pregnancy rate we inform our patients is generally referred to as the clinical pregnancy rate, which means that after the transfer, not only is the pregnancy confirmed by blood test but also by ultrasound showing the presence of a gestational sac before the pregnancy is considered clinical. The embryo transfers performed at our center are mostly split stage embryos (some centers only perform blastocyst transfers, which have a higher pregnancy rate because the poorer embryos have been screened out, which I will explain in a separate post), and my patient data shows that the clinical pregnancy rate for first-time IVF patients under 35 years of age is 48%, which is close to 50%, and if the patient is younger than 30 years of age, the pregnancy rate will exceed 50%, which means that the pregnancy rate is most related to If the patient is younger than 30 years old, the pregnancy rate will exceed 50%, which means that the pregnancy rate is most relevant to the age of the woman, and if she is older than 40 years old, the pregnancy rate will plummet. Some centers will advertise that their pregnancy rate is 60-70% or even higher, which will be the following: 1, the level is high, it is worth to learn, this is definitely the international level; 2, all blastocyst transfer, the pregnancy rate will be higher, but the cost is that some patients lost the opportunity to transfer (some embryos did not form blastocyst), the denominator is small, the numerator / denominator ratio is naturally large, this is a mathematical problem; 3, some centers advertise the so-called pregnancy rate of more than 50%. The so-called pregnancy rate advertised by some centers is actually the biochemical pregnancy rate, which is only the result of a blood sample that reveals signs of embryo implantation, even if the hcg value is only a few tens, or a transient appearance that falls back, without any possibility of further development. So, I completely understand the patient’s wishes, but we should all have a proper understanding of pregnancy rates. I think I am a kind and honest person, and the majority of my patients think I am a fairly dedicated doctor. I will not fool my patients about how high our center’s pregnancy rate is, but I will do my best to help those who are struggling with infertility, and I will share the joy with those who are pregnant, and I will analyze the causes and decide the next step with those who are infertile, and work together to create the miracle of life. Finally, I wish you all a happy new year and an early pregnancy!
