College freshmen should be alert to psychological problems such as adjustment disorders

A college or university had a very shocking news: a student just a few days into the school jumped to his death! The reason for the child’s suicide was surprisingly simple: the weather was hot and the school had no air conditioning. However, from the perspective of medical psychology, poor school living conditions can only be said to be the surface cause of the child’s suicide, if the child was psychologically examined in time beforehand, it was possible to detect his psychological problems and intervene in time to save his life. With the rapid development of China’s economy, the nation has entered an era of high psychological load, and this “gray psychology” is getting closer to children. According to some surveys on the current state of mental health of children and adolescents in China, about 13% of elementary school students, 15% of junior high school students, 19% of high school students and 25% of college students have psychological and behavioral problems. The main psychological problems of college freshmen are reflected in five areas such as maladaptation, interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, depression and paranoia, and the most common psychological problem is maladaptation. For example, Xiao Li was treated as the jewel of her parents at home, and she imagined that the college dormitory was spacious and comfortable, with bathroom and toilet, and washing machine. After she joined the university, she realized that university life was actually very hard and she had to rely on herself for everything. As she only knew how to study at home, she could not do laundry and was not good at socializing with others. Finally, she had to leave the university due to symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, depression and other symptoms of adaptation disorder. University life is completely new to new students, the reality is different from their imagination, some of them will have difficulties in adapting to the new environment, and some hurdles will become psychological problems if they can’t get over them. The psychological problems of college freshmen are caused by society, family and themselves, but the students’ own psychological quality is especially important. There are three reasons why students cannot adapt to college life: first, poor self-care ability; second, poor psychological tolerance; third, poor interpersonal skills. Therefore, parents and teachers should pay attention to cultivating a sound personality, good psychological quality and strong social adaptability in children. After entering the university, new students should actively adapt to the new environment, face difficulties bravely, exercise themselves in the new environment, gradually build up self-confidence, arrange their lives reasonably, and exercise their abilities in life, study and interpersonal communication. If you have a psychological problem, you should not be afraid to consult a psychologist and seek help.
