Does the presence of jaundice mean that liver disease is worsening?

Increased liver disease can lead to elevated bilirubin, but elevated bilirubin is not always the result of liver disease. Especially when yellowish skin and eye staining is noticed along with fever and abdominal pain, that may indicate that biliary stones are at work. If the jaundice worsens with lighter or even grayish stool color and itchy skin, it may indicate a tumor of the biliary system, and we recommend that you first perform an ultrasound or abdominal CT examination, and further surgical treatment is needed after a clear diagnosis.
