Since laser vision correction surgery (LASIK) began spreading from Europe and the United States to many countries around the world in the 1990s, it has enabled many nearsighted patients around the world to regain clear and bright vision. However, there have been controversies surrounding the safety and side effects of LASIK surgery. Recently, part-time professor of ophthalmology at Taipei Medical University, who was the first to introduce the procedure in Taiwan, Rui-Fang Tsai suddenly announced that he would not move this surgery in the future. He said that long-term observation found that many patients who underwent the surgery more than a decade later, vision loss significantly, analysis may be related to the inflammation of the corneal flap after the knife. In this regard, Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital Optometry Medical Center experts said, from the current situation, the surgery is very safe, the hospital since 1995 began to carry out laser treatment of myopia surgery, has been nearly 17 years, the treatment of more than 60,000 patients, so far, has not encountered because of the excimer surgery led to serious vision loss and the occurrence of sequelae. Professor Wang Hua, director of the Optometric Medical Center of Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital, said that after discussing with many ophthalmologists in China, he agreed that in recent years, with the continuous updating of medical equipment and improvement of doctors’ technical level, excimer laser myopia correction surgery has developed to a fairly mature stage and its safety has been widely affirmed. If there are really sequelae, it may be that the preoperative examination is not strictly in place and the indications are not strictly grasped. Excimer laser for myopia has very strict contraindications, first of all, some acute inflammation of the eye, such as acute conjunctivitis, keratitis, lacrimal sacitis, etc. can not be operated; secondly, serious dry eye, cone cornea, cataract, fundus lesions can not be operated; finally, patients suffering from autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatism are also not suitable for this surgery. For some patients, after receiving the excimer laser surgery, there is indeed vision loss, Wang Hua said, some people will indeed have a period of time after the excimer laser surgery vision loss, such a group of people is about 5%, analysis of the reasons, mostly because of post-operative eye care does not lead to the formation of new myopia; the second reason is that part of myopia, especially high myopia, there may be myopia itself is still in the progression, and a few years later, there is a new myopia, these two cases of vision loss, generally are one or two degrees, the highest is not more than three degrees, and can be corrected by wearing glasses, there are also some can still be corrected by re-operation; the third cause of post-operative vision loss to consider other eye diseases, such as whether the emergence of fundus retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataract, glaucoma, etc. All of them can lead to vision loss, and these are not directly related to surgery. The people who came to Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital for myopia correction before were mainly teenagers aged 18-30, mostly due to the pressure of further education and employment. As the first to participate in the surgery, has been 60,000 patients to perform surgery Wang Hua said, not everyone is suitable for laser surgery, only between the age of 18-50 years old, myopia in 100-1200 degrees or less, the corneal thickness can not be too thin people can do. Before the surgery, the hospital will also conduct a rigorous screening of patients to develop a personalized surgical plan according to their different conditions.
