Cervical mucus plug is a sticky secretion that is secreted by the cervix after pregnancy due to increased levels of progesterone. The cervical mucus plug appears at the end of the cervix and protects the fetus from infections in the uterine cavity. After labor, when the fetal head is stimulated to descend, the mucus plug is shed in preparation for delivery. A red, sticky fluid will flow from the vagina, signifying that the baby is about to be born. In late pregnancy, a small amount of cervical mucus plug may come out, which also indicates the maturation of the cervix. The cervical mucus plug will be followed by a small amount of redness, and labor will start within two days, so you should be prepared to go to the hospital for delivery.
