When is the best time for liver transplantation for cirrhosis?

Cirrhosis is a relatively common advanced liver disease in China, and with the continued maturation of liver transplantation technology, liver transplantation is now an option for the treatment of end-stage cirrhosis. If more serious complications occur, liver transplantation can be performed at this time. Therefore, the best time for liver transplantation is when the liver function is gradually declining and associated complications arise that require liver transplantation to improve the symptoms. For example, ruptured bleeding esophagogastric fundic varices, formation of refractory ascites, recurrent episodes of hepatic encephalopathy, the possibility of hepatorenal syndrome, and often spontaneous peritonitis, relatively low albumin levels, and coagulation disorders require consideration of liver transplantation. The less severe the preoperative condition, the lower the surgical risk of liver transplantation and the better the postoperative recovery.
