Causes and treatments of migraine in the elderly

Migraine is a functional headache. The cause of migraine in the elderly may be related to their own lifestyle, such as in case of poor rest, strain, mental tension or improper diet, which may easily trigger migraine attacks. The treatment for migraine is as follows: Give the patient an ice pack to apply a cold compress to make the blood vessels in the head constrict, and the patient’s pain will be reduced. When a migraine attack occurs patients are advised to lie down and take a nap, the symptoms of migraine will also be relieved after rest. Patients can improve the symptoms of migraine through head acupuncture and head massage. If the migraine is severe, symptomatic oral pain medication can be taken to relieve it. If the migraine is mild to moderate, oral medications such as aminoglutethimide tablets, ibuprofen extended-release capsules, depot tablets and indomethacin can be taken. For severe migraine attacks, patients can be given oral ergotamine and caffeine for relief.
