Commercially available soda drinks are generally not recommended for diabetic patients. Diabetes mellitus is a disease caused by disorders of insulin secretion and/or utilization. Soda generally refers to an aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate, a synthetic carbonated beverage, a beverage containing weak alkalinity in which carbon dioxide is pressed into purified drinking water and sweeteners and flavors are added. Soda water with extra added sugar on the market is generally not recommended for diabetics to avoid blood sugar fluctuations. Also excessive consumption of soda containing carbon dioxide may cause the uncomfortable symptom of stomach bloating. Diabetic patients are advised to arrange their diets under the guidance of their doctors, and to seek prompt medical attention if they find their blood glucose levels abnormal.
