Overview of blunt contusion of the eye

Blunt contusion of the eye: blows from fists, balls, falls, traffic accidents, and explosions are common causes of blunt contusion of the eye. In addition to producing direct injury at the site of the blow, blunt force transfer within the eye and the wall of the globe can also cause multiple indirect injuries because the eye is a less compressible sphere. For example, there can be intraocular blood accumulation, lens dislocation, fundus retinal detachment and fissure. Some patients have severe damage to the posterior segment of the eye, but may have no or only minor damage to the anterior segment of the eye. Therefore, a thorough eye examination should be done to detect hidden lesions. The physician will treat the specific site and extent of the injury correctly.
