A hard lump in the armpit that is painful to press is usually due to inflammation. Inflammation, which is characterised by redness, swelling, heat and pain, may be the cause of swollen lymph nodes. Some hard lumps caused by tumours can also be painful when pressed and will need to be examined in hospital to determine the nature of the lump.
