Does fatty liver hurt?

Typically, fatty liver may present with pain in the right upper abdomen and liver area. Fatty liver is a disease characterized by excessive fat storage and steatosis in liver cells. Numerous factors such as alcoholism and obesity can lead to the development of the disease. Patients are often asymptomatic, and in a few cases, fatigue, mild discomfort in the right upper abdomen, vague pain in the liver area or epigastric distension are seen. Its appearance of pain is mainly due to the fact that patients with fatty liver have more fat accumulation in the liver, and the liver volume increases, which will produce obvious stimulation of the liver envelope. Since there are sensory nerves distributed in the liver peritoneum, patients may feel pain in the liver area. Therefore, patients with fatty liver are likely to experience pain. In addition, it is recommended that patients with fatty liver go to the hospital in time, follow the doctor’s instructions and actively carry out treatment to avoid delaying the condition.
