How to tell if you have fatty liver

Fatty liver can be judged by general examination, blood lipid, liver function and other laboratory tests, ultrasound and other imaging tests. 1. General examination: mainly measuring height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, calculating body fat index, waist-hip ratio, waist-height ratio and so on, and secondly asking whether there are eyelid xanthomas, liver palms, spider nevus, hepatosplenomegaly, ascites and so on, which can make preliminary diagnosis. 2. Laboratory examination: mainly lipid examination, including the determination of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglyceride and other indexes; secondly, it is necessary to improve the liver function examination, such as the detection of menthionine aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and other indexes. Meanwhile, hepatitis virus infection related indexes need to be detected, such as hepatitis B virus surface antigen, hepatitis C antibody, etc. Laboratory related indexes can assist doctors to clarify the cause of fatty liver, complications, severity and so on. 3. Imaging examination: common testing methods mainly include abdominal ultrasound, abdominal CT, abdominal MRI, etc. Abdominal ultrasound has lower sensitivity, if the value of diffuse liver density is reduced in abdominal CT examination, and the ratio of diffuse liver density between liver and spleen is between 1.0~0.7, then it will be mild fatty liver, and <0.5 will be severe fatty liver. MRI looks primarily at proton density to determine fat content and is the gold standard for mild fatty liver. If you need to diagnose fatty liver, it is recommended to go to the hospital in time and decide the specific examination method after the doctor's comprehensive evaluation with your condition.
